Why Mice Keep Coming Back No Matter What You Try (And the Simple Fix Most Homeowners Get Backwards)
Traps, poison, peppermint, plug-ins. If you've tried them and the droppings came back anyway, you didn't do it wrong. Almost everything on the store shelf is aimed at the wrong problem.
6 minute read
The silverware drawer is one of the first places people find them.
It usually starts small.
A few dark specks in the silverware drawer. A chewed corner on the cereal box. A faint scratching in the wall right as you're falling asleep, the kind that makes you lie still and listen.
So you do what everybody does. You buy a couple of snap traps. Maybe a box of poison for the garage. Maybe peppermint oil on cotton balls, because someone online swore by it.
And for a week or two, it seems like it worked.
Then you open the drawer and there they are again.
If that's where you are right now, take a breath. It's not because your house is dirty, and it's not because you missed a spot. It's because most of what gets sold for mice treats the mouse you can see, not the reason it showed up in the first place.
Why everything you've tried stops working
Here's what tends to happen with each of the usual fixes, and why the droppings come back.
Snap traps
A trap catches one mouse at a time. A single female can have 5 to 10 litters a year. You will not out-trap that, and you're the one emptying them at 6am.
Poison bait
The mouse doesn't die where you can find it. It dies inside a wall or under the floor, and you live with the smell for weeks. Plus it's poison, in a house with kids and pets.
Peppermint cotton balls & sprays
One single scent that fades in a day or two. Mice get used to one smell fast, and they walk right past it.
Ultrasonic plug-ins
The sound is blocked by walls, furniture and boxes, and they need an outlet. The FTC has warned sellers about making claims these devices can't back up.
Dryer sheets & mothballs
Dryer sheets get dragged off and shredded into nesting. Mothballs are a pesticide that leaves your whole house smelling like a closet.
The exterminator
Usually $150 to $300 a visit. It works on the mice that are there that day. Then the house sits warm and inviting again, and many people end up on a quarterly plan.
The part nobody explains: your house is still "advertising"
Mice don't wander in at random. They follow their nose. A mouse's sense of smell is how it finds food, judges danger and follows the trails other mice left behind.
To a mouse, your kitchen, garage and basement smell like the perfect place to spend the winter: warm, quiet, with crumbs and cardboard and a hundred little gaps around pipes and doors that no one could ever seal completely.
Every time you remove one mouse, the space is still there, still smelling like a safe place to live. So another one moves in.
That's the part most people get backwards. The goal isn't catching more mice faster. It's making the spots they travel through smell like somewhere they don't want to be, all day, every day, in every spot at once.
Why one oil isn't enough (and four is different)
Peppermint is the right idea used the wrong way. It's one scent, it's usually in something that dries out in a day, and it's usually in one spot.
A layered blend works differently. When several strong scents mice dislike are released together, slowly, from the same spot, the smell doesn't fade by Thursday and it's a lot harder to get used to.
PeppermintThe sharp, cooling scent mice avoid.
CinnamonA second strong layer on top of the mint.
CedarwoodThe scent people have used against pests in closets for generations.
Castor oilA thick base that helps the blend release slowly instead of evaporating.
Put that blend in a small pouch you can tuck anywhere (no outlet, no spraying, nothing to reapply every day) and you've got something that keeps working while you get on with your life.

Where to put them (this matters more than anything)
The biggest mistake is putting one pouch in one corner. Mice come in through more than one gap, so you want a pouch in every spot they travel. Twelve pouches is enough for the usual problem areas in a typical house:
- Kitchen: under the sink, behind the stove and fridge, in the back of the pantry.
- Anywhere you've seen droppings: drawers, cabinets, closet corners, behind the washer.
- Entry points: the garage door corners, the basement, where pipes come through the wall.
- Storage: garage shelves, attic hatch, under the stairs, the shed.
- Vehicles you park for a while: cabin floor and trunk of the car, truck, RV or boat.
How many packs? One pack covers the kitchen plus one or two problem areas. Most homes with a garage or basement do better with two packs. If you've also got a shed, a camper or a barn, the three-pack is the one to get.
What to expect after you place them
Place the pouches. The scent is there right away, you'll notice a fresh minty smell up close.
Check your usual spots. Most people start by watching the drawer or corner where they found droppings.
This is when people tell us they stopped bracing themselves before opening the pantry.
Swap in fresh pouches to keep the scent strong. One pack makes refills simple.
An honest note: RODENTO repels mice, it doesn't kill them. If mice are already nesting inside, use it alongside traps or a pro to clear them out, and use the pouches to make the house a place they don't come back to.
What customers are saying
"I started noticing mouse droppings in the corner of our garage, mostly around some boxes we keep stored there. I didn't really want to keep setting traps everywhere, so I decided to give these a try. They're easy to place around the areas I'm concerned about, and I like that there's no mess to clean up afterward."
Mark T."Our basement has a lot of storage shelves, and I was worried about mice getting into the things we keep down there. These pouches work well for that since they're small and don't get in the way. So far I'm happy with them."
Linda R."I keep my tools and gardening supplies in an outdoor shed and noticed some signs of mice in there. I didn't want to spray anything all over the place, so these seemed like a good option to try. Super easy to use, and works like a charm."
Chris B."We live in an older house, so every now and then we have issues with mice and rodents, especially when the weather starts getting colder. I bought these to try around the garage and a couple of other areas. Working great so far."
Amanda W.The old way vs. the RODENTO way
| Traps, poison & visits | RODENTO | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost over a year | $600–$1,200 on quarterly visits, or endless trap refills | $90 for 36 pouches |
| Dead mice | In traps, in walls, under appliances | None, they're repelled |
| Poison in the house | Yes, with bait | No, plant oils |
| Your job | Set, check, empty, reset | Place and leave |
| Garage, car, RV, shed | Hard to cover | Anywhere, no outlet |
One pack costs less than one exterminator visit. And it comes with a guarantee, so the only real risk is waiting while another season of mice moves in.

Common questions
How fast does it work?
The scent is there the moment you place a pouch. How quickly you see fewer signs depends on how many spots you cover and whether mice are already living inside. Most people check the same spots after a week or two.
Will my house smell like peppermint?
Up close, yes, a fresh minty-cinnamon smell. Across a room it's faint. Most people like it better than the smell they were dealing with.
Is it safe around kids and pets?
There's no poison and no bait. It's plant oils in a sealed fabric pouch. Like anything with essential oils, place pouches where kids and pets can't chew or play with them.
Does it kill mice?
No. RODENTO repels, it doesn't kill. That's the point: no dead mice in the walls. For an active infestation, use it alongside traps or a pro.
How long does a pouch last?
Up to 90 days. Swap in fresh pouches every three months to keep the scent strong.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Email support@getrodento.com within 30 days and we'll refund you in full. You don't need to send anything back.

P.S. The longer mice stay comfortable in a house, the more spots they use. The easiest time to keep them out is before they've settled in. Twelve pouches, ten minutes of placing them, and 30 days to decide if it was worth it.
